His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, K.G., kindly accepted the invitation of the President, Commander Ralph G. Jenkins, OBE, DSC, RN Retd., to declare the 'Bill Soloman Room' open on the 12th June 1978.

The Duke of Edinburgh arrived by a helicopter of the Royal Flight at the nearby cricket ground and was driven to the museum to be welcomed by the President of the Society, Commander Ralph Jenkins and the Chairman of Waveney District Council. For Cmdr Jenkins the occasion was one of reunion with a former shipmate, for they served together at the Royal Navy Petty Officer's School, Corsham and subsequently when they both qualified at the Royal Navy Staff College, Greenwich.

After looking round the museum and showing great interest in the exhibits and display areas, see picture below, the Duke of Edinburgh had encouraging words for members who had garnered so much from the age of sail and steam. The visitors book is a proud exhibit to this day.

The Duke of Edinburgh's visit gave great encouragement to the small band of volunteers who give so much of their time and the Museum's standing continues to increase.  It marked something of a turning point as the 20th century was already drawing to a close. Advanced technology of local post war shipbuilding, fishing, and  oil beckoned.
